The Vinyl Brew: Festive Favourites

The years end is upon us and as we settle into the holiday cheer, it’s time to set the mood with some festive favourites. Shiny Day Brewers,

The years end is upon us and as we settle into the holiday cheer, it’s time to set the mood with some festive favourites. Now, I know that this isn’t for everyone, but I think it’s fair to say we all have a favourite Christmas track even if the thoughts of listening to a whole album fills us with dread.

Before we start, I’d like to throw out some honourable mentions and some obvious choices; the two big hitters every year that re-release a Christmas album are Michael Bublé and Mariah Carey and both are very festive. The talented Andrea Corr has an excellent addition to the holiday playlist with her Christmas Album and sure there are a million compilations that all offer a plethora of seasonal cheer.

I thought we would try to focus on a few favourites, some old, some new, but all choices that fill us with the magic of Christmas. First on our list today is the incredible voice that is Andrea Bocelli and his latest release ‘A Family Christmas’, in which he performs several classic hits with two of his children, Matteo and Virginia. Picking their favourite Christmas songs, there is a good selection of tracks that should please everyone. Andrea’s vocal talent has clearly been passed down to his children and the album is full of the joy of family. A definite classical taste to every track, this would be a perfect album to have on over dinner, just playing softly in the background to accent the moment.

Next up, is a personal festive favourite, and one that is played every Christmas morning in our house. Its a soundtrack to a story that has been put to film 135 times. There have been many stand out versions of it but as is often the case nobody does it better than The Muppets. We are of course talking about ‘The Muppet Christmas Carol’. This soundtrack tells the story in musical fashion and after one listen will have you singing along. With the vocal talents of Kermit, Fozzie, Ms. Piggy and the crew in full force and joined by Sir Michael Caine, it is an album of joy to start the day off with

Lastly, let’s talk about the big hitter that everyone should have in their collection and will definitely have a certain age group singing along to it! Perfect for Christmas night, playing while a sherry or two are being enjoyed and one of the greatest artists of all time, The King, Elvis Presley and his classic album, 'Christmas'. A selection of songs that define the sound of Christmas, with hit after hit that just scream holiday season. You’ll know every track and as the night progresses, will be doing your very best Elvis impression along with every song. This is one for all the family and will fill any seasonal get together with fun and joy and who can ask for more than that at this time of year?
